Chapter Six

Eventually, they broke apart, and he cleared his throat uncomfortably. “I’d like to ask you to come back to my place with me, but I’m sharing a room in the motel with some of the crew. I don’t have anywhere to take you.”

She thought of her own tiny, single bedroom right next to the living room in her parents’ small house. The walls were so thin that any noise echoed from one end of the house to the other. “I can’t ask you back to my place, either. At least, not to stay the night.” And there was no way she was going to check in at a local hotel and risk running into someone she knew. Her love life was nobody’s business but her own.

He grimaced as he bent down to retrieve her dress from the grass. “I guess we’d better get dressed, before things go too far.”

She wanted Lucas like she had never wanted anyone before. The lack of a private room wasn’t going to stop her from making love to him. She didn’t want anything from him that he wasn’t prepared to give her. All she wanted was a night in his arms, a night of feeling wanted and cherished, a night of passion and tenderness and caring. If she passed up this opportunity to get close to him, she knew she would regret it for the rest of her life. “Do you have a blanket or something in your truck?”

His face was troubled. “You deserve roses and champagne. I’m not going to make love to you for the first time in the back of a car like we are a couple of randy teenagers.”

The image, and his horrified reaction to it, made her smile. “I wasn’t suggesting the truck.” Though, to tell the truth, she would’ve accepted if he had offered. “I was thinking about the ground.”

“Here? In the open air? Are you sure?”

She shrugged. A little thing like that wasn’t going to stop her. “It’s getting dark. There’s no one else around for miles in any direction.”

He blinked. “Yeah, I’ve got something in the truck. Give me a moment. I’ll be right back.”

After rummaging in the back seat of his truck for a few minutes, he came back triumphantly trailing a heavy picnic blanket behind him. He laid it out on the ground with a flourish. “It’s hardly a first-class room in a swanky hotel like you deserve, but it’s all yours.”

To her eyes, it looked perfect. She sat down on it and patted the ground next to her in an invitation for him to join her. “All ours.”

The wool was scratchy on her skin and the ground underneath was uneven and lumpy, but she didn’t care. All that mattered was the heat of him as he lay next to her, and the touch of his hand on hers.

He drew her panties off and kicked off his jeans and boxers. Her pale skin glowed in the twilight while his darker tones disappeared into the gloom.
